Hunter O’Riley is an awesome success story horsemen would drool over. He was bought for $50,000 and ended up so far making $620,000 in his racing career. Going as far as to win [G1] races. So how did this happen? How did this horse go from being a $50,000 horse at an auction to a [G1] winning horse?
The female side will go first, starting off with the broodmare sire. I’d talk about the 1st dam, but there isn’t much to talk about besides her bloodline. Young unraced mare with a few horses she’s produced.
The start of the 1st dam’s awesome bloodline starts with the broodmare sire. The broodmare sire is Bernadini which was a $3,000,000 horse himself and has progeny like Cavorting, Stay Thirsty, Eclair and has had several horses with double-digit start and some going over 20. That speaks to the conformation traits this horse passes down. As a broodmare sire, which is what we are most concerned with, he’s had 329 broodmares and 726 foals of racing age. 61% are starters, 38% are winners, 5% are black-type winners with an AEI of 1.69.
The broodmare sire and his line are really good. I’d be happy with his broodmare stats. I didn’t like the cross mostly because there wasn’t a lot of horses in it so there wasn’t any real statistically significant results.
The second dam is filled with sturdy and well above average horses. Several have raced well into the double digits and almost all of them have won. About half of the winners are black-type horses. So this family is very impressive. Since the first dam is pretty new, this is a great indicator of how Hunter O’Riley will turn out.
Gangbuster and Dreamcall are both black-type winners in the second dam and they have 35 and 19 starts respectively. Which that alone is very impressive. It shows how sound they are. The black type is just icing on the cake.
The sire’s side of the family is equally important. His sire is Tiz Wonderful who has sired close to 30 black-type winners and has close to $30,000,000 in career progeny earnings. His dad is Tiznow who himself is a great sire, but he’s I would consider a sire of sires. On the top 150 list of sires in North America, he is #45 and has 4 of his progeny also on that list.
Tiznow is the granddad. He was a great horse who won over $6,000,000 and was a horse of the year and champion 3-year-old. He won the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice among other graded races. He also had an AWD of 9.4 furlongs which is much closer to what Hunter O’Riley has done in his races.
Hunter O’Riley has done a lot of good stuff. He has been profitable and has done well for the owners. His AWD is over 10 furlongs with a DP of (4, 5, 7, 0, 0) or (2, 3, 5, 0, 0) depending on where you look (there are a few differences in the list of chef de race on pedigree query and equineline). That seems a little off if a horse is doing well at 11 and 12 furlongs. This also goes to show that dosage and pedigree are only part of the equation and that’s why you need good horsemen to help these horses achieve their potential.
He’s near the top of his game right now, but he has a year or two left at this level. That would mean he would be a 7 or 8-year-old and still running at a solid level. My reasoning is he’s a solid horse who has already surpassed a lot of people’s expectations. What’s another year or running a few races? As long as he is sound, there’s no reason why he can’t run for at least another year.
